On the start line of a competitive gravel race, wheel choice usually comes down to a trade-off: go wide for tire support and grip, or go light for the climbs — rarely both. The SandStone SL Ninefold is built to remove that trade-off. At 1225g for the set, it’s the lightest wheel in the entire SandStone line, without narrowing the rim to get there.
The core of that is the spoke build. Where the standard SandStone SL uses an even spoke count front and rear, the SL Ninefold runs 20 carbon spokes up front and 24 in the rear — an asymmetric lacing pattern made possible by carbon spokes and our own 9th Wave Onda-G hub. The result is a wheel that’s stiffer laterally, so power goes into forward motion instead of flexing the rim under a hard sprint or a punchy climb, while still absorbing enough road buzz to stay comfortable over a long gravel stage. It’s not a wheel that trades comfort for stiffness — both improve over the regular SL.
That stiffness sits on top of the same 52mm-deep, 37mm-internal ART asymmetric rim profile that defines the SandStone line, built hookless and tubeless ready for tires from 40mm up to 66mm. The wide internal width means you’re not choosing a narrow race rim just to save weight — you get the same tire support and cornering grip as the rest of the SandStone range, on a wheel that’s over 150 grams lighter than the standard SL. The 9th Wave Onda-G hub — our own gravel-specific design rather than an adapted road or MTB hub — is what makes the carbon spoke count and the low weight possible in the first place.
For a rider who wants the best equipment available and isn’t willing to accept a weight penalty for a wide, capable rim, the SL Ninefold is the answer: race-day weight with race-day width, hand-built in the Netherlands and backed by our Lifetime Warranty and Crash Replacement Program once you register your wheels. Read more about the engineering behind the asymmetric spoke build in our journal article, or compare it to the standard SandStone SL if you don’t need the absolute lowest weight.
