Saturday is a hard gravel race, and next weekend the same bike goes out loaded for three days of bikepacking. Most riders solve that with two wheelsets, or with one that is a compromise in both situations. The Anath 423 SL is built to be the single wheelset that doesn’t force that choice.
It starts with the rim. At 33mm internal width, it is wider than most gravel rims, which gives a tire a rounder profile and supports the sidewall along its full height. That is what lets you run a lower pressure for comfort and grip without the tire squirming in a corner. The rim is rated for tires from 40mm up to 62mm, so it takes a fast 40mm race tire and a 2.35-inch mountain bike tire for a rough bikepacking route equally well.
At 42mm deep, the rim is tall enough to smooth the airflow around a wide tire instead of leaving the tire bulging out past a narrow rim, which is where much of the aerodynamic loss on gravel wheels comes from. Underneath the carbon, the ART asymmetric rim design brings the spoke tension on both sides of the rear wheel closer together. Together with 24 Alpina Ultralite spokes front and rear and DT Swiss 240 EXP Straight Pull hubs, that gives you a wheel that stays stiff under a hard climb or a loaded bike and keeps its tension over long distances. The whole set weighs 1377g.
If you want a light, strong and wide wheelset for racing, long days out or bikepacking, this is the one. It is hand built in the Netherlands, and once you register your wheels, the carbon rims are covered by our Lifetime Warranty and Crash Replacement Program. Fiets Magazine tested this rim in its February 2025 issue, and you can read what the testers found in our journal article. If you want even more width, the SandStone SL runs a 37mm internal width.
