Some rides ask for two things at once: rolling Classics-style roads, where you sit in the wind and sprint out of every corner, and the long climb afterwards, where every gram counts. The Avalon SL5 is built for both: fast, stiff and aero at 1357g.
It uses the same rim as the Avalon SL5 Ninefold, built with 24 Alpina Ultralite aero spokes and DT Swiss 240 EXP hubs. Steel aero spokes give a stiff, direct feel when you put the power down, and DT Swiss 240 EXP hubs are known for their reliability and can be serviced at almost any bike shop.
The rim is 50mm deep at the front and 55mm at the rear. The front wheel steers the bike, so a slightly shallower profile up front keeps the bike calm in gusts while still giving you an aerodynamic advantage. At the back, the air is already disturbed by you and the bike, so the extra depth adds little aerodynamic gain. What it does add is lateral stiffness from the rim itself, where it counts: when you accelerate and sprint. At 23.5mm internal width, the hooked, tubeless ready rim is rated for 27 to 33mm tires. For the best aero shape, low rolling resistance and high grip, we recommend 28 to 30mm tires. The ART asymmetric rim design evens out the spoke tension between the drive and non-drive side of the rear wheel, so the wheel holds its shape under sprint loads instead of flexing energy away.
