For most gravel riders, wider is better, which is why we build the SandStone SL and the Anath 423 SL as wide as we do. But a rim has to match the tire, the riding style and the terrain, and for one rider a slightly narrower rim is the better choice: someone who rides tires around 45mm, rides fast, and rides mostly on smooth gravel. The Anath 456 SL is made for that rider.
Its 26.5mm internal width is designed around 40 to 45mm tires and rated for 38 to 50mm: wide enough to give the sidewall real support and keep the tire round, and light enough to keep the rim at 420g. At 45mm deep, the rim sits at what we consider the ideal height for this kind of riding: deep enough for an aerodynamic advantage at race speed, and for the stiffness you feel when you sprint out of a corner.
Underneath the carbon, the ART asymmetric rim design evens out the spoke tension between the two sides of the rear wheel, so the wheel stays stiff and holds its tension over long distances. DT Swiss 240 EXP Straight Pull hubs engage the moment you accelerate, and 24 Alpina Ultralite aero spokes front and rear keep the whole set at 1358g. The rim is hookless and tubeless ready.
This is a wheelset for sporty, speed-focused gravel riders who race or ride hard on good gravel paths. It is hand built in the Netherlands, and once you register your wheels, the carbon rims are covered by our Lifetime Warranty and Crash Replacement Program. Read more about who benefits from this rim width in our journal article. If you ride tires wider than 50mm or rougher terrain, the Anath 423 SL has a 33mm internal width for tires up to 62mm.
