In 2017, before wide rims were the obvious choice in mountain biking, we launched the original Yarrow 29 with a 29mm internal width. It wasn’t an instant bestseller. It took years, and the rest of the industry gradually catching up to what we’d already built, before wide rims became the standard everyone expected. That’s where 9th Wave’s carbon MTB wheels started, and it’s still where we build from.
The Yarrow SL29 Ninefold carries that forward at what we’ve found to be the sweet spot for a 29-inch wheel: 32mm internal width. It’s wide enough to properly support the volume of modern XC and marathon tires, and it works just as well for trail riding and light bikepark or enduro use. It isn’t built for downhill or aggressive enduro, where a different kind of wheel is the right tool.
Ninefold is the top of the 9th Wave range: our own Onda-M hub, made in Europe, with Center Lock, Boost spacing (front 15×110 / rear 12×148), and a hub set that weighs just 265g for the pair. Building our own hub means we can match it exactly to the spokes we want to run: 24 Sapim RC-1 PBO fiber spokes front and rear. We’ve worked with several synthetic rope-style spoke technologies over the years, and each comes with its own trade-offs. RC-1 gives us the comfort and low weight without the downsides we’ve seen elsewhere: it doesn’t stretch, doesn’t discolor, and doesn’t fray.
9th Wave started in mountain biking, and that background shapes this wheel. Weight matters, and we don’t pretend otherwise, but not at the cost of strength and comfort. The goal isn’t to build the single lightest wheel possible — it’s to build one of the lightest in the world, without giving up the wide rim and the damping spokes that make it work on the trail. The ART asymmetric rim design keeps spoke tension even side to side, for a wheel that holds its shape under load.
This is a wheelset for XC racing, marathon distances, and set routes into the mountains. Hand built in the Netherlands with rim tape and valves installed, and once you register your wheels, the carbon rims are covered for life. At 1065g, it’s the lightest wheelset we build. If you ride 32-inch wheels instead, the Yarrow SL32 Ninefold uses the same build on our larger platform. Curious why 29-inch wheels still make sense alongside our new 32-inch line? Read our journal article. Want the same 29-inch rim with steel spokes and DT Swiss hubs? Take a look at the Yarrow SL29.
