On the challenging terrain of the Mountain Bike Marathon World Championship in Scotland, Henrique Avancini emerged victorious to claim the title. The experienced Brazilian, riding for his own newly formed Avancini Racing Team for the first time, won this gold medal for the second time in his career.
From the start of the race, Avancini was in the lead group, and he gradually widened the gap with his competitors.
9th Wave’s contribution
On elite level, every detail matters. Avancini’s team used wheels from the Dutch wheel builder 9th Wave during the championship.
Avancini competed on the company’s Ninefold Flex Ultimate wheels. They give considerable lateral stiffness while keeping a high level of comfort. That comes from a low rim structure combined with Dyneema (rope) spokes made by Berd. Avancini used a mixed wheelset, with a 35mm (internal) wide front rim and a 30mm (internal) rear rim, for extra grip at a weight of just over 1100 grams.
Looking towards the next races
After his marathon victory, Avancini was set to compete in the XCC and XCO races of the championship. For these races he could choose the even lighter Yarrow SL wheels from 9th Wave, weighing 1008 grams.
Update: wheels with Berd spokes are no longer part of our range. Today our Ninefold wheels use Sapim RC1 carbon spokes. The Flex is no longer in production (see our Flex SL article) and its successor is the Yarrow SL29.
